In scrapbooking terms, to "Crop" a photo simply means to cut a photo. You will usually crop a photo for a few basic reasons:
To remove damaged edges To trim out a distracting feature in the photo To remove an unnecessary background To make it fit on your layout better
Not all photo's have to be square!! There are many templates available to transform your photo's into many interesting shapes such as circles, hearts, ovals, windows...the list is endless.
Tips for cropping To start with, look at your photo and decide what is the focal point of the image and ask yourself, "is there something in the picture distracting me from the subject?" if so cropping may be needed. If you are hesitant to cut into your beloved photo (especially if it is precious and the only copy) I suggest that you scan the image, or get a copy made before you go any further.
Make yourself a set of cropping guides out of some scrap white cardstock. Use these to put over your photo to see what it will look like once it has been cropped. You can use the same technique with other shapes, simply cut the shape into some scrap card and lay over the top of your photo to get the same effect as cutting off the edge.
When cropping be careful not to cut off an important aspect of the photo, such as a landmark from your holiday, or something of sentumental significance. Remember your photo should be telling a story.
Think twice....cut once.
Always keep in mind the focal point of your photo before cropping.
Remember with careful cropping of your photo's you can really make them a feature of your layout.....which is the idea right!!
